Scotland decides west is best for first trial of pre-wetted salt

Pre-wetted salt will be used on west Scotland’s roads for the first time this winter, as part of Transport Scotland’s £5M winter services plan.
It is anticipated that 80,000t of salt will be spread and 139 road sensors will monitor temperature changes to give crews the best-possible opportunity to keep roads clear of snow and ice. Pre-wetted salt is made by adding brine to the salt, helping it stick to the road and decreasing wastage.
John Gooday, Transport Scotland’s national network manager, said: ‘This is Transport Scotland’s first full winter in operation and we will work hard to do all we can to keep the country’s trunk network moving.
‘The use of pre-wetted salt in our two west units is a first for Scotland and we look forward to seeing the results. We plan to roll it out to the east regions next winter.’
