School pathfinder bids fail to impress the masters

Every bid submitted to the Government to become a school travel pathfinder has been rejected, because none met all the criteria, says the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

The DCSF said it was now consulting with the Local Government Association to work out how to proceed. ‘There were some very good ideas mentioned,’ said a DCSF spokesman.

‘But none fully met the criteria.’

Hampshire County Council, one of 23 authorities to submit plans, expressed disappointment at the decision, saying pathfinder status would have allowed it to build on its own self-funded pilots, which had seen a reduction in vehicles outside school gates and improved school attendance.

‘We could have used the results of our pilots to work up tailored packages which best met pupils’ needs,’ said council leader, Ken Thorber.
