Scarborough replacement scheme gets under way

Work was due to start this week on repairs to Scarborough’s sea defences, including the replacement of 20 cracked or fractured Accropodes.
The inter-locking pre-cast concrete blocks on Castle Headland were surveyed last month, using laser-scanning technology. In all, 50 of the revetment’s 4,400 units were found to be damaged since its construction in 2004 (Surveyor, 2 September 2004). The borough council has been advised to tackle damaged clusters, and monitor, rather than replace isolated Accropodes.
Works, including repairs to voids, are being carried out at no cost during the contract’s defects period, although contractor Edmund Nuttall accepted no responsibility for the damage.
The project has been dogged by controversy. Scarborough was baled out by a £20M government grant after unforeseen ground conditions pushed the £33M cost to £55M.
