Satellite technology will put bus operators on the spot

More than 400 electronic information signs are being installed at bus stops in Cambridgeshire, to give passengers real-time information on local bus services.

The satellite-linked technology also has the potential to give passengers up-to-the-minute travel information delivered to their computer or mobile, wherever they are – at home, work or travelling.

At least 80 buses are already equipped to report their positions via a radio network to a central computer which calculates how long they will take to reach stops along the route equipped with the system.

The system is being rolled out via specific routes in the county, giving the estimated time to departure for the equipped vehicles and the scheduled departure time for all others. Once the roll out is completed, the new system will cover around 400 bus stops.

Cambridgeshire county councillor Mac McGuire, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: ‘Passengers get up-to-the-minute travel information via signs, mobile phones or computers. And there are other advantages, For example, we are working with the University of Cambridge to determine traffic flows to better plan traffic systems in the city.’
