Sat Nav ups safety and cuts congestion, says DfT

The Department for Transport has stressed that satellite navigation systems ‘have the potential to reduce congestion and improve road safety’.

While it acknowledged problems caused by HGVs being guided down inappropriate routes because they are using sat navs designed for cars, a spokesman highlighted how sat nav system and map providers were ‘aware of the issue’.

One system offering rail bridge height information is available, and others, including additional information on width and weight restrictions, are in preparation, he said. But the DfT did not rule out legislating to tackle the issue. It was considering responses to its consultation of earlier this year on whether the legislation on route guidance systems was ‘fit-for-purpose’. One option was to introduce voluntary regulation, where companies would check that systems complied with DfT guidance on routeing.
