‘Sandwich board’ tradition could be off the menu

A loophole created by a court ruling which has allowed businesses to advertise by employing people to hold signs on street corners could be closed this autumn.
The London Local Authorities Bill, due to become law later this year, will give councils the power to ban mobile street signs from designated areas. Westminster City Council believes the unopposed Bill will allow it to end the tradition of the ‘sandwich board’, which dates back to the 19th century.
A Westminster City Council spokesman said: ‘There is tremendous pressure on Westminster to allow advertising and as such, we have to regulate it strictly, otherwise there would be chaos. If the individuals wanted to attach the signs to buildings, we would not allow them, but a court ruling means we have no power to stop them using mobile signs.
‘They hamper the free flow of pedestrians in central London’s busiest shopping area,’ he said.
