Safety training delays measures to save lives

The installation of speed indicator display (SpID) signs in Lancashire has been delayed because of health and safety fears.

When six were first bought by Lancashire County Council, local police took responsibility for recharging batteries and moving the signs to different stretches of road. However, parish councils were asked to step in when around 50 of the signs were to be placed around the county.

‘There is willingness among parish councils to take over maintenance of the signs, but the stumbling block at present is the requirement for suitable safety training and insurance,’ said an LCC spokesman.

LCC policy says that anyone installing one of the signs, which sit at 7ft 2ins above the ground, would need ‘working at height’ training. The council has contacted the fire service to see if it can provide training in time for their arrival.
