Safety comes first as York upgrades Fulford Road

City of York Council has developed a series of proposals for the A19 Fulford Road to increase pedestrian and cyclist safety and improve the environment for local residents.

It also hopes to enable faster and more reliable services to be provided to encourage increased bus use. The road is one of the main arteries into the south of the city, and is notorious for its rush-hour traffic.

The proposals are at the consultation stage, and subject to change in response to the views of residents and road-users. Works proposed at present include new crossings, more cycle paths, and shared bus and cycle lanes.

A property developer has committed to putting in a new junction with traffic lights when its project in the area is completed, which, it is hoped, will reduce the amount of traffic building up in residential areas.
