Sad sign of the times

Shropshire County Council is set to test new, glass-fibre road signs, in a bid to deter thefts.

The council and its contractor, JDM Accord, is trialling these new signs following recent thefts of aluminium signs across the county.

It is believed the signs are being stolen for their scrap value, but the new glass-fibre signs have a lower scrap value.

New signs will be introduced on an ad hoc basis across the county, to replace older signs or those which have been stolen.

Chris Edwards, Shropshire County Council’s head of network management, said: ‘We hope that by trialling these new signs, it will discourage thefts.’
