Royal borough takes dim view of camera decision

The Royal London Borough of Kensington & Chelsea said it was ‘stunned’ that Transport for London did not need planning permissions to erect congestion-charging cameras on the borough’s roads.

The council had taken enforcement action against camera poles and associate equipment that TfL had installed in Holland Park Avenue and Abbotsbury Road. But, a planning inspector ruled that TfL did not need planning permission to erect the cameras.

Deputy leader of the council, Daniel Moylan, said: ‘This is a black day for London’s conservation areas. The decision, which we are still considering, means TfL is under no constraint about what it erects in conservation areas – and this cannot be right.’ The council’s main concern was that the camera poles were not in keeping with the surroundings.
