The UK’s first recycling reward scheme will launched in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead next week.
The initiative aims to revolutionise household recycling in the UK by encouraging people to take part through reward initiatives (Surveyor, 5 March 2009).
It will be piloted initially for three months with the council’s green waste collection, before being expanded to mixed recycling.
Launched by Veolia Environmental Services and RecycleBank, the scheme is based on the successful rewards programme run by RecycleBank in the US, where it serves 1M residents. It gives households the opportunity to sign up for RecycleBank reward points, which can then be used to buy goods and services from a range of local and national shops and businesses or donated to charity.
Cllr Liam Maxwell, lead member for sustainability, said: ‘The pilot gives us an excellent opportunity to test a system that rewards residents and reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill. It also supports our local economy by promoting borough shops and businesses alongside big international names such as Marks & Spencer and Legoland.’
