Ross-on-Wye flood alleviation scheme gets underway

Work has started on a £7M flood alleviation scheme in the Herefordshire town of Ross-on-Wye, which was hit by serious flooding seven years ago.

The Ross Flood Alleviation Scheme has been in the pipeline since the flooding in December 2000, and has been developed in consultation with local businesses and interest. Funded by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the scheme aims to increase the amount of water that can flow through the watercourses, and excess water from the two brooks will be diverted away from the Greytree Road culvert into a 350-metre long tunnel being built between two car parks.

Further excess water will be stored by a 1.7-metre high earth bund east of the A40. The scheme was due to start in spring 2006, but was delayed over government funding difficulties.

Cllr Brian Wilcox, Herefordshire’s cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: ‘This year we have again been reminded how devastating floods can prove to county residents. ‘This scheme will ensure the people living in Ross-on-Wye are protected in the future.’
