Roads petition tops 1.5M

The transport secretary is under pressure to listen to the public after a record-breaking petition to Downing Street opposing its road pricing plans.
The online petition to scrap the Government’s planned vehicle tracking and road pricing policy has reached almost 1.5M signatures, and is tipped to reach two million by the closing date of 20 February. Opponents want the pay-as-you-drive road charges scrapped and for the Government to focus on improving roads to reduce congestion. Transport secretary Douglas Alexander this week said he would debate the issue before a final decision was made. However, roads minister, Stephen Ladyman, has since told MPs that national road pricing was inevitable, and there was no alternative.
