Roads deal offers island jobs boost

The Isle of Wight’s planned roads PFI contract could create jobs worth £4bn during its 25-year life – both in the project and among companies relocating to the island – according to the project technical manager Malcolm Smith.

He reportedly told a meeting of Cowes Town Council that the PFI project was unlikely to begin until 2013 but would see all the island’s roads upgraded within seven years.

The PFI contractor would hand back all the roads in ‘as new’ condition at the end of the 25 years. Mr Smith said that informal discussions had already been taking place with suitable companies capable of undertaking the scheme.
