The Department for Transport’s head of road safety has held out the prospect of the Government backing down on its plan to lower the penalty for speeding in 30mph zones.
Mike Fawcett, speaking at a Brake conference on speeding, responding to a question over why the department was not acting on residents’ concerns over ‘anti-social’ speeding, said the Bill merely allowed ministers the option to take the powers. A consultation on the precise detail of a variable-penalty scheme would be held, with evidence-based proposals. The DfT was ‘very much alive to the concerns about the two-point penalty plan. So watch this space and watch out for the consultation.’
He also acknowledged concerns about not ring-fencing the new grant funding for road safety schemes, but said councils had sufficient incentive to spend the money, given their targets for reducing casualties.
