Road safety: Europe cuts road deaths

 
There were some 41,600 road deaths in the EU in 2005, down from around 50,000 in 2001, the European Commission reported. This was progress, ‘but not enough’, said Brussels, which wants member states to halve the rate to 25,000 by 2010 under the EU’s road safety action programme. It said legislation on driving standards for professional drivers and measures to improve vehicle safety have made a difference.
