Road safety: EC steps up road-death fight

 
The European Commission has promised ‘new road safety initiatives’, following a public debate held by the Council of Ministers on progress towards halving the number of road accident victims.
The Austrian presidency of the European Union has signalled its support for an ‘infrastructure directive’ to improve the safety of roads and reduce the 50,000 annual death toll by 2010 (Surveyor, 26 January). The commission told the Council of Ministers last week that more effort was needed.
