Road safety: ... And Scots’ KSIs fall to lowest level for 50 years

The number of deaths and serious injuries on Scotland’s roads fell to the lowest level for more than 50 years in 2007, according to official statistics. Department for Transport figures reveal there were 16,063 road casualties last year, the lowest since 1950, and 7% down on 2006. There were 282 fatalities – 10% fewer than 2006 – and 2,316 serious injuries, 12% down on the previous year. Child deaths were at a record low. Transport minister, Stewart Stevenson, said: ‘These are encouraging statistics and I welcome the fall. However, we cannot and will not be complacent. ‘We are currently working with some of the leading thinkers on road safety from across Scotland and Europe to help inform a new Road Safety Strategy for Scotland, which will be published later this year.’
