Transport for London will introduce an instant paying system for the capital’s congestion charging scheme next year.
IBM will take over responsibility for operation of the congestion charge and low-emission zones in November 2009, and TfL has confirmed that work is under way on the design of a system that will enable automated payment accounts.
The new technology will allow motorists to register their vehicle registration numbers and a credit or debit card in advance, so payment can be taken automatically when they are detected entering the zone.
A TfL spokeswoman told Surveyor the new system would be rolled out midway through 2010. ‘TfL is introducing changes including a new contract to manage the congestion charge, which will save £400M and enhance the service for drivers,’ she said.
