Trafford MBC has given the go ahead for the road infrastructure to be put in place that will lead to the development of one of the biggest freight terminals in Europe.
Sited at Barton, Port Salford will be the highest capacity rail terminal in Britain, and although most traffic will be operate along rail links and the adjoining Manchester Ship Canal, property giant Peel Holdings believes the road links to the site are crucial.
Now Trafford has given the green light for the company to build a new road to allow it easier access to the nearby M60 and the inter-connecting M6 and M62. The council has also agreed a swing bridge will be built across the ship canal.
A Peel spokesman said: ‘We are delighted planning permission has been granted for the Trafford section of the western gateway infrastructure scheme. ‘The canal road crossing will allow improved access across the Manchester Ship Canal for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport, including the ability to accommodate the Metrolink, if it was to be extended to the Trafford Centre.’
