Six per cent fewer people were killed or seriously injured on Britain's roads in 2005 than the year before.
The latest annual road accident statistics reveal that there were 32,155 KSIs overall, a dramatic, six per cent reduction compared to 2004. But the number of deaths fell by only a fraction, from 3,221 to 3,201.
While two-wheeled motor vehicle KSIs dropped by two per cent, the number of pedal cyclists killed rose sharply, by 10% to 148, the highest level since 1999.
Overall KSIs were 33% down compared to the 1994-98 baseline, which means the target to reduce KSIs by 40% by 2010 is close to being achieved.
