Road Springs back into use following summer floods

A stretch of the A46 in Gloucestershire has reopened for the first time since last August, when it was struck by a landslide caused by the summer floods.

The closure of the A46 at Salmond Springs is considered one of the most damaging and long-lasting effects in Gloucestershire of last year’s flooding.

The council has, so far, secured £10M towards repairing roads severely damaged by the summer flooding, but is still lobbying the Government for more help to fill the funding gap.

The flooding left the council with a highways repair bill of £25M, of which the A46 scheme cost £1.2M. The newly-repaired stretch of road is 100m long and is supported by 12 miles of steel reinforcing bar.

During the work, 1,000t of material was excavated and removed in order to stop the movement and enable piling works to take place.
