River Cart back in business for commercial traffic

The rebuilding of Scotland’s historic Bascule Bridge enabled commercial traffic to travel down the River Cart last week for the first time in decades.

Over the past six years Renfrewshire Council has invested some £1.4M in rebuilding the bridge as part of its commitment to keeping the River Cart open to commercial traffic.

The council’s plan bore fruit last week when two steel spools, with a combined weight of 80t, were transported along the river on a 600-mile sea journey to Newcastle.

The listed bridge was built in 1923 and is one of the country’s last remaining operational drawbridge-style bridges. It was raised to its full 30m height while the barge passed underneath.
