Rising confidence as flood project advances ahead of time

The first part of the Environment Agency’s £36M flood- alleviation scheme for Carlisle is ahead of schedule.

The improved defences along the Rivers Eden and Petteril were not due to be completed until May next year, but the early finish means homes in the Warwick Road and Botcherby areas of Carlisle will be protected from the disastrous levels of flooding which occurred in January 2005.

Some early finishing work still has to be done, and is due to be completed early next year. Carlisle MP, Eric Martlew, welcomed the Environment Agency’s announcement and said, now the flood defences were in place, he would contact insurance companies to ask them to reduce householders’ premiums.

The work has improved protection from river flooding but will not affect flooding from surface water or drainage, and the EA is working with United Utilities, Carlisle City Council and Cumbria County Council on other flood-prevention projects. Glynn Vaughan, the Environment Agency’s flood risk manager, has urged people in Carlisle to sign up to its flood warning service, Floodline.

Construction on the second phase of the EA’s flood-alleviation scheme, which will cover Caldew and Carlisle city centre, will start in spring next year, and is due to be completed in 2010.
