Richmond encourages ‘green’ travel

Large businesses in the London borough of Richmond have been given £10,000 worth of bicycles by the local council, in a move to encourage ‘green’ ways of travelling to work.
Staff at businesses, which include the London Wetland Centre, Hampton Court Palace, Lensbury Country Club, National Weights and Measures, and Study Zone, were given bikes worth £280 each.
Richmond upon Thames Council received money from Transport for London specifically for the scheme, which also seeks to encourage environmentally-friendly transport plans in the borough.
Cllr David Trigg, council cabinet member for traffic, transport and parking, said: ‘We are looking for a trickle-down effect on small to medium enterprises.’
The council is working with businesses on other plans, but the details have not been finalised.
As a major employer in the borough, the council is not
included in the bicycle scheme. Instead, it is working on a ‘similar, government-funded initiative’, Trigg said.
Opposition councillor Tony Arbour is reported to have called the expenditure ‘an outrageous misuse of taxpayers’ money’.
However, Cllr Trigg disputes the claim. He said: ‘How can it be an outrageous misuse of taxpayers’ money when it helps the companies, it helps their employees, and it helps reduce traffic congestion and pollution?’
