Revamp sparks congestion fears

A £38M improvement scheme to ease congestion at junction 6 of the M62 will have the reverse effect during Liverpool’s Capital of Culture year without careful traffic management, the Mersey Partnership has warned.
The improvements will begin in the spring and continue for 22 months – meaning the motorway link into Liverpool will be disrupted during major events planned for next year.
Dave Moorcroft, acting chief executive of The Mersey Partnership (TMP), said: ‘Improvements to junction 6 will boost our connectivity with the rest of the region which will strengthen our economic competitiveness.
‘However, the complexity and scale of the project must be managed carefully if we are to avoid serious and potentially-damaging congestion on our major motorway gateway route into the city during 2008.
‘It is vital that the Department for Transport and its contractors do everything possible to minimise the disruption – certainly when there are major Capital of Culture events taking place which we know will be attracting visitors from outside the region, many of whom will probably be travelling into Liverpool via the M62.’
The improvements will provide two new link roads to increase the capacity of the junction and remove congestion and delay at its busiest period. A new footbridge/cycleway will also be provided to improve journeys across the M62 for pedestrians and cyclists.
Dr Stephen Ladyman, roads minister, said: ‘This junction is a key gateway and these improvements will tackle congestion, improve accessibility and make journey times more reliable.
‘This will help boost the economic regeneration of Merseyside
