Revamp for rail system

Nexus has completed renewal of all five level crossings on the Tyne & Wear Metro system, with new rails, sleepers, ballast and road surfacing.

Rail replacement was seen as particularly important to retain the integrity of the tracks, which see hundreds of train movements every day. Track geometry was improved, and industry-standard decking with Holdfast rubber panel systems should improve surfacing and skid resistance.

‘The work has been complex, and involved some service disruption, but we have managed it well and kept disruption to a minimum and hit all of our deadlines,’ said Metro director, Mick Carbro.

The crossings renewed were in Newcastle and North Tyneside. Crossings on the Sunderland line are maintained by Network Rail.
