Return of the tram gate fines

Motorists in Sheffield will once again be fined for breaking tram gate rules, after signage was improved.

Enforcement had been lifted after an inspector ruled the former signs inadequate, and the council had to hand back hundreds of thousands of pounds’ worth of fines (Surveyor, 12 June 2008).

There are now extra markings on the carriageway to warn motorists not to enter the tram gates. From next week, cameras will be back in action at the gates, but for the first two months drivers will only be issued a warning, before fines begin in September.
