Resort wakes up to national fame as a shining example of enterprise

The physical regeneration of Scarborough’s harbour contributed to the town being named Enterprise Capital of the Year.

Following a nationwide search, the Scarborough Renaissance Partnership was awarded at a ceremony in Downing Street for its Waking Sleeping Beauty project, which has transformed the declining seaside town into a ‘shining example of enterprise excellence’.

Run on behalf of the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, Enterprise Britain 2008 is a national competition which celebrates and recognises the most enterprising places in the UK. Scarborough’s enterprise strategy focused on diversifying the economy, weaning it off its dependence on declining tourism and fishing industries.

The town’s regeneration has seen existing businesses capitalise on the physical regeneration of the harbour area.
