Resort calls for reinforcements in battle to save beach

Contractors called in by Suffolk Coastal District Council are strengthening some of Felixstowe’s groynes, in an urgent move to help protect beach levels after the storms of last November.

Some of the most important groynes around Undercliff Road East were reinforced with concrete in October, but the heavy storms of 9 November caused further problems, when beach levels were further lowered.

‘The early November storms gave the groynes in the central area of Felixstowe seafront quite a battering and, after close inspection, we decided we had to carry out some urgent emergency work,’ said Cllr Andy Smith, deputy leader and cabinet member for coastal protection. But, he said it would take a couple of years before funding would be available to carry out the necessary work to provide the long-term defences for central Felixstowe.

While the tide is out, contractors are fixing steel shuttering on to either side of the concrete groynes, filling in any gaps and levelling off the groynes at the top.

The council said it switched tack to use the shuttering approach, rather than placing tonnes of rocks, because the shutters were proving more effective in protecting the groynes, and were more in keeping with the traditional look of the beach. The emergency works will cost around £250,000.
