Residents urged to leave cars at home, for one day

Workers, shoppers and visitors to Durham City are being urged to leave their cars at home next Tuesday, in an experiment that will feature on national television.

Commuters living on the city’s biggest residential estate are being asked to cycle into work en-masse. Supported by Durham County Council and local radio station, Durham FM, the day’s events will be filmed for a three-part Channel 4 television documentary about traffic in UK towns and cities, which is due to be screened in March.

Cllr Bob Pendlebury, Durham’s cabinet member for transport and sustainability, said: ‘Whether it’s cycling, walking, catching the bus, using park and ride, or even car-sharing, we’d like to see as many people leaving their cars at home for the day and enjoy new travelling experiences.’
