Plymouth City Council has received a 20,000-signature petition from residents opposing privatisation of the council-owned bus company.
Council leader, Vivien Pengelly, said the local authority would take into account the views of all its residents before making a decision, but added that 95% of people had yet to express a view.
‘It is our responsibility to protect the city’s taxpayers from financial risk, and that’s what we are doing by looking at the sale of CityBus.’
Up to 100 bus drivers protested outside the council’s offices calling for the local authority to rethink its plans.
Clayton Roberts, regional officer for Unite, said: ‘The public petition makes it perfectly clear that the people of this city want CityBus to stay in public hands.’
