Residents flee mudslides

A clean-up operation is under way after a Scottish coastal village was hit by mudslides, forcing residents to flee.

Engineers have been removing hundreds of tonnes of mud which had swept through Pennan in Aberdeenshire from the surrounding cliffs following heavy rain.

The incident led to the evacuation of all the residents in the village.

Aberdeenshire Council chief executive, Alan Campbell, said: ‘The emergency services carried out a sterling job and council staff are making good progress with the clear-up operation.’
