Residents back congestion charge...with conditions

Cambridgeshire residents oppose congestion charging in principle, but would support it if all revenues raised were spent on improving transport in the county, according to a council consultation.

A face-to-face survey of 1,100 residents revealed 32% supported the principle of congestion charging, against 49% who oppose it. However, 55% would support congestion charging if revenue was re-invested in transport, and 59% would it if attractive alternatives were in place for travelling in Cambridge.

The county council consulted the public following its bid for £517M from the Government’s Transport Innovation Fund. The proposal includes a congestion charging scheme which would operate in the weekday morning rush hour, and cost between £3 and £5.

Three-quarters (76%) of respondents said they would use their car less if there were suitable alternative ways to travel.

In addition to the face-to-face survey, the council consulted online and at a series of road shows, where respondents were most likely to support congestion charging if combined with the aforementioned scenarios. Online respondents were least likely to support it.

Cllr Keith Walters, leader of Cambridgeshire County Council, said: ‘In terms of congestion charging, it’s not surprising that many people have concerns about the scheme and I’m certain we need to spend more time investigating these concerns.’

The council will now consider the results with district councils and other partners.
