Research grant to cut Welsh carbon

A £34m programme to drive forward research to secure a low-carbon future for Wales and create ‘green’ jobs has been announced by first minister, Rhodri Morgan.

The Low Carbon Research Institute Energy Programme is aimed at meeting Welsh Assembly targets for reducing carbon emissions by helping turn new technology into commercial reality.

Ground-breaking research projects will get under way in areas such as hydrogen for powering transport, power generation using biomass, and photovoltaic (PV) technology to generate electricity.

The scheme will be led by Cardiff University, in partnership with other Welsh universities. Mr Morgan said: ‘This programme will put Wales at the forefront of industry-led research from a range of sources, and reduce energy demand across all sectors.’
