Report calls for £4.6bn package to stall gridlock

A £4.6bn package of transport improvements is needed in the West Midlands to prevent gridlock and create the platform for growth and regeneration, according to a new report sent to the Government.

The transport strategy outlined in the report will form the basis of any West Midlands TIF business case.

It stresses the need for upfront investment in public transport to provide alternatives to the car, if road pricing is to be accepted by the public.

Cllr Roger Lawrence, transport leader for the West Midlands, said: ‘Historically, transport projects have been worked up in isolation, separate from vital strategic plans for housing and regeneration. ‘For the first time, we are drawing these threads together to plan a major programme of transport investment for the West Midlands that is critical for the future development and competitiveness of the region.’

He said projects such as the Midland Metro extensions and Bus Rapid Transit were urgently needed to support growth without the West Midlands grinding to a halt.
