Recycling in Wales reaches new level

 
Municipal waste generation and landfill are falling in Wales while recycling levels continue to climb, reaching 33.4% in 2007-08.

The latest municipal waste management report for Wales says waste generation has been falling for three years and just under 1.8Mt was produced in 2007-08.

Landfill remains the principal disposal route but has fallen from 1.57Mt in 2001-02 to 1.16Mt last year, while recycling levels rose from 30% in 2006-07 to 33.4%.

Ceredigion was the most recycle-minded authority, achieving 47.9%, up from 44.6% the previous year. Other strong performers were Powys (42.2%) and Torfaen (40.3%). At the bottom of the table were Cardiff (26.8%), Merthyr Tydfil (26.2%) and Blaenau Gwent (21%).
