Record brings festive cheer

A free park-and-ride scheme over the festive season set new records for patronage, according to figures released this week.
The Peterborough City Council scheme carried more than 16,000 passengers from its two pick-up points to the city centre.
An average of 850 passengers travelled each day, leading to a 22% increase in the total number of passengers who travelled in 2005.
The authority estimates the success of the free scheme led to 6,500 fewer vehicles on the roads over the Christmas period.
