Reading’s innovative BusPad will raise the hopes for bus patrons

Reading is trialling an innovative raised platform which helps people access buses from roadside pavements.
The elevated BusPad is being trialled by the council in two locations – on a straight stretch of road and close to a bend – with the aim of testing the product as a viable alternative to a conventional kerbing system.
A spokesman for Reading Borough Council said: ‘We estimate that the BusPad can be installed for about half the cost of the conventional kerbing system. The units have now been in place for six months and show no signs of deterioration, either through use or through potential vandalism, and the bus operatives seem very happy with the units.’
The BusPad is a modular rubber unit which is mechanically fastened to the pavement surface by stainless steel fixings, with no excavation required.
