Re-cycle initiative offers a fresh start for commuters

Commuters travelling to Inverness by bus or train are being offered free bikes to complete their journey.

Launched last week by the Inverness and Nairn Transport Forum, the ‘Re-cycle’ initiative is aimed at cutting city centre congestion by giving people a ‘free option’ to get to work quickly, without using their cars.

Jim McCreath, the forum’s training and development officer, said the scheme was the first of its kind in the UK, and would be expanded, depending on demand. At present, 18 people have registered for one of the 20 bikes on offer.

Bicycles are supplied by Northern Constabulary’s lost and found department, and are located at a car park near the bus and railway stations. The Highlands Council is ‘fully behind’ the scheme, and is providing the car park.
