The first-ever bridge spanning the River Wharfe in Yorkshire could replace a historic stepping-stone crossing – if it is given the go-ahead.
The crossing has been designed by engineer Hutchinson Whitlam Associates for the West Riding Ramblers’ group.
The proposed £750,000 bridge across the river could be the solution to more than a century of campaigns for a foot crossing near Burley. The bridge would be constructed out of steel and then clad in wood, in order to blend in with the rural surroundings.
West Riding Ramblers’ chairman, Keith Wadd, said: ‘This bridge has been needed for years. When it is built, walkers will be able to enjoy the natural beauty here without worrying about crossing the river.’
