Transport secretary, Alistair Darling, has outlined plans to increase capacity on England’s rail network.
Darling wants high-speed replacements for the existing Intercity 125s, and longer trains where services are not meeting demand. Speaking at a London rail conference, he said: ‘There are many ways to increase capacity. We need to consider them all.’
Passenger numbers might increase by 30% over the next 20 years, he said. Tim Larner, of the Passenger Transport Executive Group said: ‘We need speedy investment in longer trains and platforms, followed by improved frequencies, better inter-urban connections and upgraded infrastructure.’ The Government would produce a report on the options next year.
