Rail crossing puts a new angle on Sunderland’s highway needs

Birse Civils has installed a 36m rail bridge for Sunderland City Council, creating a new bypass to the south of the city.
The £16.3M Ryhope Grange Junction underbridge is skewed at 55 degrees and comprises steel ‘I’ beams and a concrete deck 3.3m wide.
The foundations were constructed in limestone bedrock, some 10m below existing ground level, which involved the excavation and reprocessing of more than 100,000 tonnes of rock.
The work was completed within the agreed blockade timescale and the track was successfully handed back to Network Rail. The bridge allows the new road to pass under the existing Hendon Branch railway line, which carries trains to the Port of Sunderland.
