Race is on as Camden prepares for Olympics

London Borough of Camden has proposed a range of transport and public realm schemes to prepare for the 2012 Olympics, and create a legacy for local residents.
The council has put forward a series of ideas in response to the Olympic Delivery Authority’s consultation on the transport plan for the 2012 games. Camden will host the majority of the Olympic road cycling events, and many of the cultural events will probably take place in the borough.
One idea under discussion with local community groups is the Bloomsbury Strategy, which involves enhancing the roads and streets around Russell Square and the British Museum, and various walking projects from King’s Cross into central London. Other proposals include: creating public squares at Tottenham Court Road and Princes Circus; paving and lighting improvements in Covent Garden; and a number of green transport measures, such as schemes that emphasise the importance of walking and cycling.
The council is also keen to restore Whitestone Pond in Hampstead, a historic meeting point and the capital’s highest spot. Ideas include renewing the site with heritage features such as Yorkstone paving and ornate lighting. The council said it recognised that the ODA was not likely to be in a position to fully finance all of the proposals, but it was seeking support from the ODA and Transport for London to take them forward. Cllr Mike Greene, executive member for environment at Camden, said: ‘We want to make sure our local residents benefit from the long-lasting effects of the 2012 London Olympics. ‘We want to ensure that improvements to our transport, streets, parks and open spaces can be enjoyed by our local communities long after the Olympics are over.’ Westminster City Council will announce similar proposals on Friday.
