RMT and London Underground resolve long-running pay dispute

The RMT union and London Underground (LU) have resolved a long-running dispute over pay, pensions and the Night Tube.

The union called the agreement, which affects maintenance staff employed by former public-private partnership (PPP) Tube Lines, a ‘massive victory’.

Under the deal, current Tube Lines employees as well as Transport for London (TFL) and LU staff previously employed by Metronet will be able to access the TfL pension fund.

Staff will also receive an inflation-matching pay rise in every year from April 2015 until April 2019 and a £500 payment ‘in recognition of the move to a 24-hour passenger service operation’.

There will also be a further £500 payment to all operational staff following the launch of the Night Tube on the Piccadilly Line next month.

The union said that in return for these concessions it had ‘committed to examine technology driven savings across the Tube Lines and London Underground businesses in the asset and operational support areas’.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: ‘RMT is pleased to be able to report that in the two specific disputes with Tube Lines the union has been able to secure a good pay deal and, critically, we have finally been able to win equality and justice in pension provision for all Tube Lines members.

’The dispute over pensions goes back years and is a legacy of PPP. This issue is now resolved and we cannot overstate the massive achievement which has been secured through a long battle involving strike action, campaigning and years of resolve and determination from our Tube Lines members.’

Separately, the RMT is balloting members on two other disputes with voting closing on Tuesday (15 November).
