New highways contracts awarded by the RBC Windsor and Maidenhead are expected to save the local authority more than £200,000 within two years.
The work, appointed to Amey LG, includes highways, bridge and winter service as well as road resurfacing, and replaces the existing arrangement with Balfour Beatty Living Places – due for completion at the end of May.
The local authority has already announced in February plans to cut council tax by 1.5% - and planned to save residents £10m through revised waste and insurance contracts. But it had already committed £1.2m for highways resurfacing work next year.
Contractor Amey has a history of delivering savings in highways contracts – including as part of a joint-venture in Hertfordshire, which worked to Gershon efficiency targets.
However, Cumbria CC decided to bring highways services back in-house last year (Surveyor, 1 September 2011) having outsourced to Amey in 2005, claiming it wanted ‘more direct control and flexibility’ over work.
Cllr Phill Bicknell, cabinet member for highways, transport and environment, said: ‘The largest contract with Amey has resulted in a saving of 15% on the current contract which represents more than £200,000 over two years - while continuing to fulfil our commitment to deliver good quality, cost effective services for our residents.
‘Not only will we be getting the best possible value for our highways schemes but we will be supporting localism by enabling other stakeholders to use the contracts too. All of these new contracts will provide better value for our residents.’
Stephen Munro, Amey LG business director, said: ‘We are committed to giving the borough excellent value for money by delivering quality services efficiently.
‘We will be working to both maintain and improve the local highways network to meet the needs of local communities and businesses, now and in the future.’
