South Gloucestershire Council has introduced a ‘quiet lanes’ zone in a rural area near the M4.
The speed limit has been reduced from 60mph to 30mph and a 7.5t weight restriction implemented on lanes in Henfield, Coalpit Heath and Ram Hill.
Councillor
Pat Hockey, executive member for planning, transportation and strategic environment, said: ‘I know that local residents have been concerned for some time about the speed of some of the traffic in the lanes.
‘We feel the new measures will increase their safety but not spoil the rural character which is valued so much.’
New signposts from local materials will enhance the rural character and reflect local heritage. Resident Bob Ross, who campaigned for the scheme, said: ‘After a huge amount of work by the highways department in collaboration with local residents, a plan is emerging which will enhance the safety of all the lanes bounded by the Badminton Road, Westerleigh Road, the railway and the M4.’
