Pupils lose their footings

Fewer Scottish pupils are walking to school and more are going by car, according to Scotland’s latest household transport survey.

The Scottish Government survey found 51% of children walked to school last year, down from 55% in 1999, while going by car rose from 18 to 22%.

Also, driving to work had increased from 55 to 66% since 1999, and getting a lift had fallen from 12 to 7%. However, local bus use had risen from 41 to 44% since 2002, and more people said there were at least five buses an hour – 23% of respondents compared with 20% in 1999.
