Manchester City Council has teamed up with GMPTE and local bus operators to address its concerns over congestion in the Northern Quarter of the city.
The local authority has successfully applied to the northwest traffic commissioner for a traffic regulation condition to prevent buses over-using certain stops in key areas of the city centre.
The council said the congestion problem posed a serious risk to pedestrians, as well as causing severe traffic delays and increased pollution.
Cllr Richard Cowell, executive member for the environment at the council, said: ‘Piccadilly and the Northern Quarter are at the heart of the city and we had to take action to make sure that there was no danger to pedestrians or serious delays in traffic flow. We need to beat congestion and make the city an even better place to visit or live in.’
