Public to be consulted as Leeds reconsiders trams

A tram network for Leeds is back on the agenda after Metro, the West Yorkshire passenger transport executive, decided to include trams in its public consultation on what system would best suit Yorkshire’s leading city.

The Government rejected Leeds’ bid for a tram system because of spiralling costs, but Metro has decided it will put it to the public as one of three options.

A Metro spokesman confirmed to Surveyor that, in the new year, a public consultation would be launched and commuters would be asked to consider the options of a tram system, bendy buses or trolley buses as an answer to the city’s increasing traffic congestion.

He said: ‘The Department for Transport asked us to consider bus-based schemes, and we’ve studied the use of trolley buses on the Continent, and there is, of course, the option of the bendy bus.

‘To give the public further options we intend to include in the consultation a tram system, but we must stress that these are very early days. Initially, we will simply be testing the water and taking soundings. We expect the consultation to begin early next year.’

First already operates a bendy bus – the ‘ftr’ – on one route in the city.
